STATEMENT: Canadian Centre for Child Protection congratulates the UK on the Online Safety Act

For Immediate Release

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection (C3P) congratulates the United Kingdom as their Online Safety Bill achieves Royal Assent today. C3P has supported the bill and its zero-tolerance approach since its inception; calling for the enforcement of age-restrictions, removal of illegal content, and preventing children from encountering harmful material online. It is long overdue that platforms be held accountable for the serious harm occurring for children on their services.

From our work with survivors of child sexual abuse material, we know how heartened they are that the Online Safety Act is now a reality. No one more than those who live with the impacts of these horrific crimes understands the critical importance of government regulation. The United Kingdom is a leader in this space, prioritizing the online safety, rights, and protection of children. We thank the UK government and all those who have worked tirelessly to bring about the Online Safety Act for your commitment to those who are most vulnerable and in need of protection. This is a monumental moment for children.
